Some home lock jobs start with a worry. Who else has a key? Others start with a small daily nuisance, like having to lift the handle before the deadbolt will turn. Those concerns need different answers.

THE RIGHT QUESTION COMES FIRST.
01

A new home does not need the same plan at every door

On moving day, the keys you receive may not tell you how many copies exist. Rekeying suitable locks changes which key operates them while keeping usable hardware. It is worth discussing when the concern is access rather than a broken lock.

Count the doors you actually use. The front entrance, side door and door from the garage may have different locks. Some can share a key after suitable changes; others may not be compatible. There is no need to replace good hardware simply to make the plan sound larger.

A rental needs the owner or manager's approval for changes. In a building with a shared entrance, your apartment lock and the common door may be managed separately. Explain which door is involved before work is arranged.

02

A lock is part of a moving door

Notice when the trouble happens. A key that turns with the door open but catches when it is closed points to a different set of checks from a key that will not turn at all. The latch, bolt, strike and door fit all matter.

You do not need to take the lock apart to explain the problem. Describe the movement, any new scraping sound and whether a spare key behaves differently. If a key is stuck, avoid twisting it harder or adding tools to the keyway.

Our lock repair service covers the discussion around worn hardware and door operation. Rekeying addresses who can use a key. One job may need both, but one does not automatically solve the other.

03

An exposed entrance deserves a closer look

A sheltered doorway in the Tree Section and an exposed entrance near the coast can place hardware in different conditions. Tell us what the door faces and whether the finish has started to change. Material choice and care should follow the actual product, not a general coastal label.

The same care applies to a smart lock. Check the door preparation, bolt movement and exterior suitability before choosing a model. Batteries and phone access add convenience, but they do not correct a door that is hard to close.

04

Agree on a useful result

Perhaps the goal is one fresh set of keys. Perhaps it is a deadbolt that turns without leaning on the door. Explain the result you want, then ask which parts can stay and what needs attention.

At the end of a lock change or repair, try the door from both sides while you still have another way in. Check that it closes, latches and locks as intended. Keep the agreed spare where it will be useful rather than beside the everyday set.

LET'S START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW

The key?
The lock?
The whole door?

You don't need to have the answer. A plain description of what works and what doesn't is a good place to begin.
