A shop door has more than one job. It welcomes people during the day, closes properly behind them and secures the premises when everyone leaves. A key problem is only one part of that routine.

THE RIGHT QUESTION COMES FIRST.
01

Describe the point where the routine breaks

Does the key turn but the bolt stop short? Does the door close without latching? Does the opening work from one side but feel wrong from the other? A short description of the fault is more useful than choosing a replacement lock before the door has been checked.

A commercial locksmith request may concern the main customer entrance, a staff door or a separate storeroom. Identify the particular opening and who can approve work on it. A landlord, tenant and building manager may have different responsibilities.

For a Downtown business near Metlox, the public entrance and service approach may be on different sides. The shop address is still important, but include the door you need examined and any arrangement for reaching it.

02

When staff access changes

A lost key or a change in staff can raise a question about existing copies. Rekeying compatible hardware may change the working key without replacing every visible part. Worn locks or mismatched hardware can require a different plan.

Decide who needs access to which doors. A small shop may want one carefully controlled key. Another business may need separate access for a stock area. The requested arrangement should be checked against the actual locks, rather than assumed to fit every system.

If a door uses a building credential, electronic reader or shared access system, say so. This website does not establish support for every commercial access product. The equipment and responsible manager need to be identified first.

03

Look beyond the cylinder

A door that drifts open or has to be pulled hard to catch is not fixed merely by changing its key. Hinges, alignment, latch position and other door hardware can affect the result. Explain what happens during normal use, including whether the problem changes when the door is open.

Do not block or improvise around an exit to solve a lock problem. Work affecting an exit or regulated door needs the correct scope and applicable requirements considered. Mention that use when describing the opening.

For an exterior entrance, note whether it is sheltered or exposed, and keep any product information you already have. Finish wear and a mechanical fault may need separate decisions.

04

Know what will be different afterward

A useful estimate identifies the door, the proposed work and the parts or keys included. If a second issue becomes apparent, understand the change before authorizing extra work. That is easier than comparing a complete repair with a quote for a cylinder alone.

Once the agreed job is complete, test the door as staff will use it: opening, closing, latching and locking. Check any new keys at each included door. Our estimate guide gives a practical checklist for that conversation.

LET'S START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW

The key?
The lock?
The whole door?

You don't need to have the answer. A plain description of what works and what doesn't is a good place to begin.
