What the estimate covers
A small number on its own does not tell you what you are buying. A useful locksmith estimate describes the result: the door opened, the lock rekeyed, the part repaired or the car key made with the functions you need.
Start with the same job on both quotes
For a door request, identify the opening and the proposed work. Ask whether the estimate includes the visit, labor, parts and new keys where relevant. A price for one cylinder is not necessarily the same as a complete repair of the door problem.
For a car key, separate the replacement part, cutting and electronic work. Remote buttons, starting recognition and a mechanical blade can be distinct parts of the finished key. Compare the same functions before deciding one option is less expensive.
If you are supplying a part, establish whether it is suitable before assuming it can be used. A matching-looking fob bought online may still be incompatible with the vehicle.
Understand what might change after inspection
A description over the phone cannot reveal every worn or damaged part. Ask what the initial scope assumes and what would need further agreement if the actual condition is different.
When more work is suggested, ask what was found, why it affects the result and what the revised work includes. Opening a door, repairing its lock and changing the keys do not have to be treated as one unnamed service.
You can keep the conversation practical: which part is involved, what can stay, and what will work differently afterward? A clear answer helps you decide without needing to become a hardware expert.
Check who is doing the work
Ask for the business identity and the details relevant to the work being arranged. In California, the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services provides locksmith company licensing and employee registration information. They are separate checks, not interchangeable labels.
The BSIS locksmith information is a starting point for the applicable requirements and verification route. This website does not publish a verified license number or ask you to rely on an unverified badge.
For rental property, shared doors or a vehicle owned by someone else, establish permission as well. Identity and authority to approve the job are useful parts of a clear arrangement.
Check the result before filing the paperwork
For a repaired door, try normal opening, closing, latching and locking. For a rekey, test the supplied keys at each included opening. For a car key, check the functions that were agreed on the actual vehicle.
Keep the invoice or other record that describes the work and supplied parts. Ask about any care or follow-up terms that apply to the specific job rather than assuming a policy from a general website.
