Rekey locksin Manhattan Beach.

The lock may work perfectly. You may simply want to know that an old copy will no longer open it. That is the question rekeying is designed to address.

THE RIGHT QUESTION COMES FIRST.
01

What changes inside a rekeyed lock

In a suitable lock, the key-operating parts are changed to accept a different key. The visible handles and lock can often stay. Whether that makes sense depends on the type and condition of the hardware.

A new key is not the same as a copy of the old one. Copying keeps the same access in circulation. Rekeying changes access at the locks included in the work. If there are several entrances, be clear about which are covered.

This can be useful after a move, a lost set or a change in who should have a key. It does not prove that every door needs new hardware, and it does not fix a bolt that catches on the frame.

02

Count doors, then decide how the keys should work

Include the door from the garage, side entrance and any other keyed opening you use. A fresh front-door key does not change a separate lock left untouched. Note any doors that already use a different key.

Some compatible locks can be arranged to work with one key. Different keyways or unsuitable hardware may prevent that without further changes. Ask for the practical options after the locks have been identified.

For a rental or shared building entrance, get the right permission first. Your own door and a common gate may have different owners or access requirements. Do not assume a private key change should alter everyone else's access.

03

If the door is already difficult

Mention stiffness, loose parts or trouble closing before choosing the job. A worn key can be one issue; a poorly aligned bolt can be another. Lock repair and rekeying solve different problems even when both are needed at one door.

Our rekey, repair or replace guide explains those choices with everyday examples. The goal is a clear result, not a longer list of parts.

04

Check the new set before putting it away

Agree how many new keys are included. Test them in every lock covered by the job, with the door open and then in normal use. Keep a spare apart from the daily set, and update anyone who needs the new key.

Ask which old keys should stop working and whether any entrance is unchanged. That short check makes the boundary of the work clear.

LET'S START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW

The key?
The lock?
The whole door?

You don't need to have the answer. A plain description of what works and what doesn't is a good place to begin.
